Sled-base chairs are characterised by their unique design, in which the base consists of a single continuous metal tube resting on the floor. Conventional cylindrical protectors cannot be used with these specific structures. This is where the round-tube slider comes in – a custom-profiled metal fitting designed to grip the outer curve of the frame. Shaped like a half-moon or a ‘U’, this slider clips precisely around the metal tube, creating a robust support interface between the metal and your floor covering.

The primary purpose of this clip-on protector is to prevent direct and prolonged contact between the chair’s steel frame and the floor, thereby preventing deep scratches and rust. The elongated shape of the protector helps distribute the weight of the seated person over a larger surface area, reducing pressure points. Very often made from tough plastics such as polypropylene or polycarbonate, these protective glides demonstrate excellent crush resistance. Furthermore, they frequently incorporate retaining lugs or centring pins (if the tube is pre-drilled) which lock the glide in place, preventing it from rotating around the tube whilst the chair is being moved.

This type of floor pad is ubiquitous in waiting areas, conference rooms and administrative offices fitted with visitor chairs with armrests. It greatly improves the smoothness of movement, whilst ensuring reassuring stability and preventing tipping. Installation is carried out by applying firm manual pressure or using a soft mallet, forcing the plastic jaws to open and grip the cylinder. Carefully measure the external diameter of your sled frame: a perfect match between the size of the round tube and the opening of the glide ensures a secure hold that will last over time.
